Parents as Role Models in College Admissions
The college admissions process seems to be more intense than ever before, and the parents of prospective students seem to be getting more caught up in the process than ever before.
Parents should resist the temptation to get overly involved in the process, or to push their children to apply to schools that don’t interest their child, just because they may seem to lead to greater success after graduation. If you want to know what is really important in choosing a college, see my post, “Choosing a College: 5 Things to Consider.”
It also helps for parents to do a little reflection. What does success really mean? While success and happiness are not mutually exclusive, can success without happiness really be success?
During the admissions process, keep your child’s long-term happiness in mind and model how a prudent and competent adult makes decisions that really matter in life.
